HYDERABAD: In some good news for Chandrababu Naidu, the Andhra Pradesh government has been told by its revenue department that more than 45,000 acres of degraded forest land, largely encroached by locals and small industrial units, are available in the surroundings of Vijayawada for building the new capital. The chief minister, who has received the report, is likely to announce the details in the assembly on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Naidu held a series of meetings with the capital advisory committee, headed by municipal minister P Narayana and comprising experts in urban development, to give finishing touches to his announcement on the new capital. "The CM will make an announcement about these lands in and around Vijayawada and seek opinions of the MLAs. There will be a detailed discussion if the opposition cooperates," said a minister.

The report by the revenue department has identified 13,488 acres of forest land in Nunna, Nainavaram and Pathapadu areas, which are currently part of the Vijayawada?Guntur-Tenali?Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA). The department also identified 16,305 acres in Ibrahimpatnam, 10,500 acres near Kanchikicharla and 14,768 near Jaggaiahpet mandals.

"The state government has already prepared an order to ban all new constructions in the areas identified for the capital. Most of these areas will have only government buildings, including staff quarters," said sources. The government has also contacted the ministry of environment to kickstart the process of denotifying the degraded forest land to build the capital, which was allowed under the AP Reorganisation Act -2014.

Meanwhile, the chief minister held an emergency meeting with his ministers on the assembly premises to receive suggestions to be incorporated in his speech on Thursday. "He will make an announcement on the capital at 12.17 pm on Thursday," said finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu.
