DELHI: There was a mixture of hope and scepticism among applicants at DDA’s Lok Shivir, a five-day camp to expedite the process of leasehold to freehold conversion. While some people came out of the camps with conversion deeds in their hands, some complained of insufficient assistance provided by DDA officials at the camp. According to authority officials, 500 applicants turned up at the Shivir on February 17, of whom 378 applicants were issued conversion deeds on the spot. Those who did not get the conversion deeds, Authority officials said, had come for other work including enquiries about the process.

The conversion of flats from lease-hold to free-hold was, according to the new vice-chairperson of the Authority, Balvinder Kumar, his top priority. Several of those who came to the camp said they had applied for their conversion certificates months and even years ago but hadn’t heard from DDA since. The DDA vice- chairperson blamed the unconsolidated records for the delays in the process.

The camp organized at DDA’s headquarters will go on till February 21. Various areas of the capital have been designated different dates. February 17 was the day dedicated to issuing certificates for residents of Dwarka. On February 18, DDA will take up applications for east and south Delhi, north Delhi and Narela zones will be taken up on February 19, and the final day will be reserved for the remaining zones including west and central Delhi. According to authority records, there are about 3,500 applications pending with the Authority.
