DELHI: Indian real estate has progressed in leaps and bounds in the last decade and one can marvel at the rapid growth of high rise buildings across the country, be it in the inner cities, suburbs or 2nd tier towns.

India, today, is the second largest Elevators & Escalators (E&E) market with the highest demand from Western Region followed by Northern and Southern regions. The demand primarily comes from new commercial and residential projects compounded by malls, metros, airports, SEZ's and new cluster development projects.

Even after the opening of the Indian Economy in 1991, the Indian Elevator & Escalator (E&E) industry could not manage more than a pedestrian growth rate. It took till the turn of the century for the E&E industry to jump on to the growth train. From an annual market size of about 10,000 elevators in 1999, the annual market in 2013, despite the general downturn, is estimated to be above 54,000 elevators.

The burgeoning business of 'moving people' in India has provided an attractive environment for global E&E players; be it selling into the Indian market, transfer of technologies , ancillary businesses and partnerships. With the entry of high speed elevators manufacturers , there has been a paradigm shift in high rise buildings and the change in the Indian skyline.

In terms of categories, the market has evolved from a luxury perspective to a more functional and more efficient one. Given the past few years, safety coupled with energy efficiency is beginning to take center stage. This having said, the industry has a long and arduous task ahead to equip workforce with the requisite knowledge and training to see the E&E trajectory through. Needless to mention , such a situation has given rise to opportunities in training, including capacity building and safety.

Suffice it to mention that the learning curve is still ahead of us and one location, one epicenter of know-how , availability of technologies , showcasing of latest products, and knowledge transfer was warranted. The International Elevator and Escalator Expo has provided this platform since 2007 and has made us the 4th largest elevator expo in the world.
