FNG Expressway: Connectivity, smooth traffic, real growth!

DELHI: The much-awaited FNG (Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad Expressway) is finally coming on track and will provide fast connectivity to daily commuters of the area once complete; apart from this, it is also emerging as an excellent stretch for real estate development.

FNG Expressway is around 56km long with 19.9km in Noida-Greater Noida region, 8km in Ghaziabad, while the rest 28.1km is in the Faridabad region, especially the developing sectors of Neharpar.

According to the plan, FNG from Noida side will become operational in the next 14 months while it would take three years for the whole stretch to become fully operational.

Developers have already launched several projects in the newly developing areas like Sectors 117, 118, 121, 122, 137, 142, and 150 along the FNG corridor.

Why FNG Expressway

Congestion on the main roads of the cities in the NCR is going up at an alarming rate with thousands of new vehicles added to the city roads every day.

Delhi alone has six million vehicles with 1,200 more added every day. But road space is not increasing at the same pace and very soon Delhi’s roads will not be able to handle the growing traffic volume.

The scene is equally bad on roads connecting Delhi with Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida, and Ghaziabad. This is most starkly evident on the NH-8 (Delhi-Jaipur Highway), which was designed for a peak traffic volume of 1.6 lakh vehicles by 2015.

A study in Delhi and the capital’s satellite cities Noida, Greater Noida, Gurgaon, and Dwarka found that motorists crawl at 4kmph for almost 24 minutes in two hours of driving wasting 2,00,000 litres of fuel for every one million cars plying daily.

Six years of the average Delhiites’ careers are spent on roads in snarlups-7 million man hours are lost every day. Nearly Rs 100 crore worth of productivity is lost to gridlocks every day. The urban development ministry links the capital’s congestion to the origination of traffic across NCR cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, and Faridabad, as the traffic from these regions passes through Delhi. Also, congestion on Delhi’s roads has doubled in the last 8-10 years.

The capital’s congestion is the worst among 35 Indian cities and is four times more than Mumbai and Bangalore put together. A new study says that the top driving speed during peak hours will drop to 5kmph and will take someone nearly three hours to reach office located just 15km away from home.

There are 200 bridges over river Thames in London while there are only eight bridges over Yamuna, which reflects an appalling deficiency in urban planning, considering the population of this region and traffic movement.

Current status

With the population of the NCR ballooning and new mega cities like Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida, and Faridabad emerging as major residential and commercial hubs, millions of people now travel from one city to the other on a daily basis.

There is a huge movement of goods also in these regions. Keeping this in mind, the development authorities of Faridabad, Noida, and Greater Noida took the initiative to build the FNG road.

The forthcoming FNG Expressway is also talked about as G-FNG (Gurgaon-Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad Expressway), as it will directly connect all the five regions -Ghaziabad, Noida-Greater Noida, Gurgaon, and Faridabad-providing fast connectivity to commuters across the stretch.

“This expressway will establish a linkage with Gurgaon, which has happened after developers and builders under the banner of Credai (Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India) took the initiative-we have also renamed it G-FNG. As Yamuna Expressway is operational, this linkage will make traffic movement to Agra much smoother,” Sanjiv Srivastava, the MD of Assotech Ltd, said.

The 19.9km stretch of FNG from NH-24 up to the Yamuna on Noida side is under construction. Work on a flyover and clover leaf at the junction of NH-24 near Chajarsi village in Ghaziabad and an overhead road over the village has also commenced.

From Noida side, FNG originates from Sector 63 adjoining NH-24 touching Sectors 118, 119, 121, 122, 139A, 139B, 137, 142, 143, 150, and 168 and terminates at Faridabad via Dadri Surajpur Road connecting Kulesra Hindon river belt. From Ghaziabad’s entry point, FNG will connect Noida through NH-24. The authority has proposed an underpass or a flyover for this purpose.

The junction on road towards Greater Noida West (Noida Extension) before Hindon bridge near Sector 122, an overbridge near Sector 142 on Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, an approach road, a bridge over Yamuna from Noida side and a bridge over Yamuna from Formula 1 race track in Greater Noida are needed to provide fast connectivity through FNG Expressway, Noida authority officials said.

While emerging from S e c – tors 118, 122, 121, 137, and 142 FNG will intersect Noida Expressway through the proposed round-about project near Sectors 142 and 168.

There is a joint proposal from Greater Noida and Faridabad authorities to connect both the regions through the Yamuna bridge, at an estimated of cost of Rs 300 crore.

Rama Raman, the chairman and CEO of GNIDA, says: “The development authority is carrying on a demolition drive to remove the encroachments along the FNG corridor and speed up work. Today, FNG has become a very important infrastructural project, not just for real estate development but also as a facilitator of smooth traffic for the multiplying vehicular movement across the NCR. It is due to such factors that we are clearing hurdles to make way for early delivery of the project. Also, officials have been on their toes and are trying to resolve all legal issues between farmers and the Noida authority, so that work does not come to a standstill.”

Huda (Faridabad) has identified a site near Sectors 88 and 89 in Faridabad for the construction of a bridge over Agra canal. The existing road between Sectors 19 and 28 and the connecting road from Badkhal roundabout are being widened to ease the traffic load here.

Estimated to cost more than Rs 1,000 crore, the 56km-long FNG Expressway has faced several hurdles in the past as farmers refused to give up their land for the project. The authority has already completed work on 9km of the total 19.9km stretch which falls in Noida’s jurisdiction.

There is a great potential for real etstae development in the region comprising Sectors 63-79 and Sectors 112, 122, 137, and 142. These sectors are adjacent to FNG and in close proximity to Sector 18 and Noida Expressway. The Noida authority recently invited bids for the development of intersection roads to FNG Expressway and Master Plan 3 road near Sectors 121 and 122-123.

“With the completion of the extension line of the Metro towards Greater Noida and FNG Expressway, the connectivity of New Noida with Delhi and other regions of the NCR will certainly improve. The Metro route will come as an extension of the existing Sector 32-based Noida City Centre Metro line, which will be extended up to Greater Noida West via Sectors 72 and 121. The completion of FNG expressway will further improve the connectivity between Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurgaon,” Rakesh Yadav, the MD of Antriksh Group, said.
