Labourers attending rallies delays construction

NOIDA: The election fever has slowed down the speed of housing projects in NCR. Developers say that large number of labourers are made to attend political rallies to show huge public support.

Homebuyers are miffed over project delays. "The real-estate sector already has a dearth of manpower. Moreover, projects get delayed because of festivals and celebrations. During polls, construction speed slows down further because most labourers attend political rallies," said RK Arora, vice-president CREDAI (west UP) and CMD Supertech.

Real-estate experts said that the sector is largely driven by financiers who fund political parties with their reserves. "In the election year, construction is delayed by at least 5-6 months. By increasing wages or offering lucrative offers there is a way to retain the labourers, but again this option is unfeasible for all the developers because it will ultimately increase the construction cost," said Amit Gupta, managing director, Orris Infrastructure.

Meanwhile, this situation has added woes to the homebuyers. "There are only a few developers in the country, who deliver projects on time. Slowing down the pace of construction gives them one more reason to them to delay delivering the houses on time," said Abhishek, member of a flatbuyers' association.
