DELHI: Most of the apartment owners and housing societies in different parts of Gurgaon did not file their property tax despites the MCG’s deadline on the pretext that they can’t pay double taxes to different authorities – the MCG and the developer of their society.

“A lot of people living in different apartments are confused whether to file property tax despite the notice they got from the MCG. There is no clear cut direction on their website as well. Residents are confused,” said Tej Kumar Vaid, ex-president of Vipul Green residents’ welfare association.

“There are more than 644 flats in our society and 95% of the residents did not pay the tax. When the MCG is not providing any services and we are maintaining our colony at our own cost where is the question of paying property tax? Again tax rates are also discriminatory. There is also a lot of difference between the rates for individual plots and the flats. People are confused,” said Atul Aggarwal, treasurer of Vipul Green RWA, Sohna Road.

Several RWAs from different parts of the city confirmed that they have not paid house tax to the MCG. “Our colony is maintained by Ansal and we are paying tax to them, why should we pay extra money to the MCG,” said Deepak Verma, executive member of Sushant Lok-I RWA. Echoing Verma, Palam Vihar RWA treasurer O P Gupta said, “We cannot pay tax to two agencies. We are already paying to our builder.”

Reinforcing the city-wide trend, two other RWAs also said they hadn’t filed their house tax. “Nobody from our colony filed house tax,” said Sishpal Jangu .vice-president of Sector 4 and Lakshman Vihar RWA. Col D R Yadav , vice-president of the RWA of South City-II Sohna Road said, “There is no question of paying house tax to the MCG as the matter is yet to be resolved.”

The RWAs of several housing societies in Sector 56 also confirmed that they did pay house tax this time around to the MCG. “The issue of dual taxation has been taken up by Gurgaon Citizens’ Council and filed the writ petition before Punjab and Haryana high court. We requested all our members to wait till a final decision is taken by the Court and members should refrain from making payment of municipal tax. The next hearing is fixed on August 19,” said S C Rathi, president of GCC.

While a spokesperson of the MCG said, “Of course there is no penalty for non-payment of house tax but those who did not pay the taxes have to pay next year with the interest on the amount.”
