PANAJI: With the prices of real estate escalating it has become extremely difficult for the common man to find a piece of land within his means.

Providing some solace to the common man the Goa Housing board (GHB), a state-run agency has planned to build 4000-5000 houses and flats in the next two-three years.

While acknowledging that buying a piece of land, today in Goa, is beyond means of a person with limited income the chief minister Manohar Parrikar, said his government through GHB will provide housing at reasonable rates.

"The GHB will build about 4000-5000 houses and construction will start by December," said Parrikar.

He blamed real estate developers and builders saying they are charging exorbitant rates. "The cost of land including development cost is Rs 25000 per sq mts in a area like Porvorim but builders charge Rs 50000 per sq mts," he said while sounding warning that his government will not tolerate irregularities of the builders.

In developed urban areas like Panjim, Mapusa, Ponda, Vasco and Margao and also coastal belts, land prices of residential as well as commercial have gone through the roof. But buying a piece of land even in any of the obscure villages of Goa is not a cheap deal any more.
