SMC crosses Rs 500 crore mark in property tax collection

SURAT: For the first time in its history Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will collect Rs 500 crore and more from property tax this year ending 2013-14. Against the demand of 607.54 crore, it has already recovered Rs 504.68 crore as property tax till date and is likely to touch the figure of Rs 525 crore by 31 March, 2014.

In current years demand SMC has recovered Rs 454.93 crore against total demand of Rs 488.27 crore which is 93.17 per cent and is likely to cross 95 per cent recovery mark.

In Professional tax , against the recovery of Rs 72.40 crore in last year 2012-13 , SMC has already collected Rs 88.81 crore as professional tax which is Rs 16.5 crore more than last year and is likely to touch Rs 100 crore mark this fiscal .

Against the collection of Rs 37 crore as vehicle tax last year , SMC has till now collected Rs 38.14 crore by way of Vehicle tax.

It must be noted that SMC has 15.5 households in its area and the rate of recovery has been more thnan93 per cent since last four years.

Sharad Mehta , Deputy commissioner -Finance, SMC said, " Our aim is to achieve 100 property tax collection by 31 March but it looks we might fall a little short."
