SURAT: Against the current demand of Rs 607 crore for year 2013-14, recovery department of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has recovered property tax of Rs 480 crore by the end of February, 2014.
"We plan to recover 100 per cent of the current demand by the financial year end and have started taking steps to achieve it," said deputy commissioner of finance, Sharad Mehta.
SMC had issued bills to 14 lakh property owners of the city for the payment of Rs 607 crore as their property tax. Now for the remaining due of Rs 127 crore, SMC will adopt strict recovery procedure. It will disconnect the water network connections and even seal the property in case of default.
It sealed 12 properties in Katargam area of the city for not paying up property tax. Officials also sealed 337 economically weaker section (EWS) houses in the same area on March, 11, 2014.
"When we go and seal the property some owners rush to make the payment and large amount of recovery takes place in last month," said an official from Recovery department of SMC.
SMC has a record of recovery of more than 95 per cent of its demand in property tax segment since last five years.
