Wind power project: Panel clears urban poor housing proposal

SURAT: At a time when Surat Municipal Corporation's(SMC) own electricity bill is likely to cross Rs 100 crore per anum , the ruling class of the city has decided to deliberate and discuss , the proposal of setting up a Rs 47 crore windpower plant to generate own power.

After a standing committee meeting , Chairman Rajesh Desai said, " we have decided to discuss the cost of the project and talk to some other people for comparison of rates . We would decide on the project in our next weeks meeting."

It must be known that SMC is the only civic body in the country to generate power through non-conventional sources like solid waste, wind and solar . It also has two operative power plants located in Saurastra .

In the same meeting standing committee approved the construction of 2000 homes for Economically weaker section ( EWS ) and Lower Income Group ( LIG ) of urban poor, under the second phase of ongoing project of construction of 11,000 homes . These houses will be built at different places in the city . 3000 EWS and 8000 LIG houses are being built of which construction for 2500 homes has already begun .

The construction for 2000 homes would begin some time next month. In this project, beneficiaries would get sizable state and central government subsidies .
