BANGALORE: From now, pay property tax through DDs or online, and not cheques and cash. The BBMP’s decision comes following allegations that tax collectors in Herohalli, off Magadi Road, failed to deposit cheques collected from taxpayers and siphoned off the money.
Till now, the civic agency was accepting cheques for property-tax payments. Cash was accepted if the tax amount was below Rs 1,000.
BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana has decided to shut down 64 help centres operated by contract employees where property tax collection was one of the main functions.
At a BBMP council meeting on June 25, ruling party leader N Nagaraj and others demanded that the commissioner take action against officials who have misused the tax cheques and ensure such irregularities don’t recur.
“Some tax collectors are working in the same ward for over 5-10 years. This leads to misuse of power. Long-staying officers must be transferred,” a corporator said.
