BANGALORE: The threat from the underworld is no longer restricted to the rich and real estate businessmen. A senior official of the Bangalore Development Authority was given police protection after he claimed his life is under threat.
"Soon after the December 21 ,2013 shootout at Ankola, Uttara Kannada district, in which a BJP functionary cooperative leader RN Naik was killed, there were shock waves along the entire coastal belt of Karnataka where the underworld had left a terror trail in the past. Among the prominent underworld men here are Bannanje Raja of Udupi, who is reportedly hiding in Dubai and Ravi Pujari, whose exact location from where he operates is still a mystery for state police," said a senior home department official.
The security to the senior BDA official follows threats from Bannanje Raja who claims to control his outfit BR International in India with nearly 1000 henchmen. From time to time, Ravi Pujari demads protection money from real estate businessmen in the state, especially those in the coastal region, Bangalore and Mumbai.
"We sought a gunman for the BDA official who holds a crucial post in the civic agency and also the brother of RN Naik after he received several threat calls. We asked the state intelligence department to extend security to him and as per instructions, a city armed reserve (CAR) constable drawn from its headquarters on Mysore Road has been deputed," home department officials said.
