THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government’s decision to stop resurvey of private lands will have far-reaching consequences in the state with land encroachment going unnoticed.

Land disputes which could have been settled through the resurvey will increase in future. Even when there was the resurvey process, several complaints piled up at various village offices which are yet to be settled.

NGO Union state secretary Mathukutty said the decision to stop resurvey is to help those who have encroached on  government land. More encroachments will happen now, he said.

“The decision is to resurvey only the government lands. So, those who have already encroached can posses the land and it cannot be identified,” he said.

This is a move to protect the interest of the land mafia in the state, he added.

C R Jose Prakash,  general secretary of the Joint Council of State Services Organisation, said though the resurvey had started in 1996 it was delayed as the employees were deputed for other works. It was expected to be completed in seven years. However, resurvey is yet to be completed in around 1,000 villages.

“The resurvey had gone in a slow pace. Though the process was moving along the right path, the employees were deputed for other purposes after 1980s,”  said Jose Prakash.

The decision to stop the resurvey may be the continuation of the Kerala Land Reforms Amendment Bill 2002 and Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wet Land Act.  The decision was taken without consultating any of staff organisations, he added.
