MUMBAI: An over 130% cost escalation for the preparation of the new development plan (DP) for the city was disclosed on Friday, with the burden on the exchequer rising to Rs 12.83 crore from Rs 5.48 crore.

The jump was attributed to repeated delays, one of the causes for which is the forced inactivity during the poll code period this year, and the tenfold rise in the number of public meetings to nearly 30, as demanded by corporators.

As a result, establishment and infrastructure costs rose vastly. A proposal for the cost variation was cleared by the BMC standing committee on Friday.

Work on the DP started in May 2011 and was supposed to get over in December last year.

In December the state approved a six-month extension. Now the BMC needs another year.

"The DP will be ready in a year now and later we will prepare the micro-level plans for each area," DP department chief engineer Rajiv Kuknur said.

At first, there were to be only three workshops with the public and peoples' representatives for discussion on the DP, but these were increased to 29. "We are holding workshops in each ward now," an official said.

The DP work is allotted to a consortium of Indian and French companies.
