50 booked for defacement of public property

AURANGABAD: As many as 50 people were booked by the Jawahar Nagar and Osmanpura police on late Thursday night in three different cases of unlawful assembly, rioting and defacement of public property. Police said tension prevailed at Shahnoormiya Dargah Chowk area after the three different groups tried to install flags and rename the newly constructed Sangramnagar Railway overbridge.

However, no untoward incident was reported as teams from nearby police stations rushed to the spot. Two groups tried to put up flags of their respective outfit, while the third group put up a board naming the bridge after Saint Shahnoor Miyan Hamvi Dargah.

The Jawahar Nagar police and the Osmanpura police on directions of senior officials booked members of all the three groups who allegedly participated in the act.

On the complaint lodged by the Jawahar Nagar police, a corporator and five others have been booked on charges of defacing public property.

In the second case, on the complaint lodged by sub-inspector Arun Gholap of Jawahar Nagar police station, 25 unidentified people have been booked on charges of assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and for unlawful assembly and rioting, while in the third case another 20 unidentified people have been booked by the Osmanpura police on the charges of unlawful assembly and also for joining unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapons.

Howver, no arrests have been made so far.
