Burglaries despite 24 hour vigil

PUNE: Most burglaries reported in the city over the last few months have been attributed to poor security in residential complexes. While most housing projects have private security agencies in place providing round-the-clock vigil, burglars have clearly taken advantage of the laxity of security guards and also their poor visibility.

Take for instance the break-ins in 16 locked flats last month in Wakad, when the burglars gained entry into three residential societies despite the presence of security guards. In other cases too, the police pointed out how the agencies neither followed a security drill nor were their guards properly trained.

Sources from security agencies said that guards deployed at residential apartments lack on-the-job training. "Security in housing complexes needs to be upgraded. Present security guards are not well-trained. They do not have even basic security equipment like a baton and are not aware of basic training on how to react in challenging situations like theft or fire," an official from one agency saidsaid.

He further said that guards appointed for security are generally in the 20-45 age group. "However, it is observed that security guards at residential complexes are either very young or are senior citizens. Societies need to avoid this."

On their part, agencies providing security to housing societies and residential apartments said that they would now initiate steps to sensitize on-duty guards to increase vigil to prevent entry of unidentified persons. Agencies, however, said that societies too need to install latest security equipment such as CCTV cameras in the premises and also at parking and entry-exit gates.

"We will ask guards to make sure that every visitor makes an entry into the log book placed at the entry-exit gate before entering the society. We will also try to make sure that the guard would guide visitors to the building to avoid any confusion. For this, we will place guards not only at the entrance but also at every wing. Such steps would restrict entry of unidentified persons to some extent," a field officer of a security agency said.

Another officer of a security agency said, "We get a six monthly feedback from guards. We discuss issues and problems they face and try to work out solutions. Guards often express the need for a good communication with society members particularly in security matters."

Security in housing complexes needs to be upgraded. The existing security guards are not well-trained. They do not have even basic security equipment like a baton and are not aware of basic training on how to react in challenging situations like theft or fire
