THANE: The state-owned City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has proposed to develop many regions in Thane district as mega-cities, Cidco chairman Pramod Hindurao has said.

"We are currently carrying out a survey of land whereon we can plan and develop public amenities, including affordable housing. With the development of the new international airport, Cidco plans to concentrate on spreading its activities in Bhiwandi, Badlapur, Kalyan, Thane rural, Shahapur and Murbad areas of Thane district. Urbanization is fast catching up in these areas and there is a need to set up a planned city,'' Hindurao told TOI, while assuring that there will be no overlap of power and areas being planned by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The Cidco chairman has taken up the issue of developing regions beyond Thane creek with chief minister Prithviraj Chavan after discussing it with Cidco officials. As the issue is still at a preliminary stage, the government has not taken any decision.

As part of the development plan for these peripheral regions, Cidco has started exploring the possibility of a metro rail between Murbad and Taloja through Ulhasnagar.

Meanwhile, Cidco, which has been appointed the planning authority for area around the proposed international airport, has begun work on plans to the area that falls within the 25-km radius of the airport and includes some areas beyond Thane creek.

Residents of areas beyond the creek such as Kalwa, Kharegaon, Parsik Nagar and Mumbra are ecstatic about these plans. They are more than happy if the planning agency takes up this project and builds suitable infrastructure in these areas.

I have been staying in Kharegaon Park and it is a relatively peaceful area. Though a lot still needs to be done, if Cidco undertakes the project then it would nice. The Thane Municipal Corporation is unable to provide amenities at the same pace of urbanization,'' said a resident.
