AURANGABAD: The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Sunday initiated the auction process of 28 blocks belonging to shop owners in the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) complex at Jadhavwadi market after they failed to pay property tax.
The municipal commissioner Harshdeep Kamble, had earlier set a deadline of March 30, 2014 for tax payment. The shop owners have been evading property tax since 1998. When the shop owners did not respond to the AMC ultimatum by Sunday afternoon, the civic body decided to auction the blocks under section 8 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949.
The civic body has been recovering property tax from about 907 shop owners in the APMC premises, despite disagreements between the two parties over the tax amount. Initially, shop owners refused to pay the tax as per the 2006 Net Rateable Value (NRV). They were demanding that tax should be calculated as per the NRV of 1998, when the shops were sold. However, the civic body recently accepted the owners' demand on tax based on the NRV of 1998. All other shop owners had settled the disputes with the AMC.
