NAVI MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is set to develop a theme-based Central Park in Savali village, Ghansoli.

The park will be one the lines of the Central Park in Kharghar developed by City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco).

However, the civic body's park will be spread over just 41,000 sq m, compared to Cidco's Central Park, which measured a sprawling 11.9 lakh sq m.

The proposed park's bhoomipoojan was done by MLA Ganesh Naik, in the presence of mayor Sagar Naik, Airoli assembly MLA Sandeep Naik, former Thane MP Sanjeev Naik and other corporators, civic officials and residents at Savali village on Sunday.

MLA Sandeep Naik said that the residents were demanding a park similar to Central Park in Kharghar for a while.

"Accordingly, under Garden Vision, one of the NMMC's welfare and development schemes, Central Park will be developed in Savali village. The park will be based on a theme — forces of nature comprising earth, sky, fire and water," he added.

MLA Ganesh Naik said that Ghansoli villagers had contributed a lot to the fight against British rule and many martyrs had laid down their lives for the country.

"As a mark of gratitude towards the local freedom fighters, as proposed by Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik, a Shahid Smarak will be built inside the park," he added.

He added that artifacts depicting the traditional culture of the Agri-Koli community shall also be installed.

This park will also provide job opportunities to PAPs and local residents.

NMMC's executive engineer (garden department) Sanjay Desai said that the project will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 17.63 crore in first phase for developing the infrastructure. Another Rs 10 crore will be spent for setting up the theme.

"The first phase of the project will be completed by August 2015. The second will be completed as and when the government sanctions the MLA fund. The government has provided Rs 8.05 crore under the MLA fund," he added.

Desai added that in the first phase, the civic body will build a compound wall, an entry gate, water supply, electrical fittings, internal roads, pathways and parking lots, toilet blocks, landscaping, jogging track, administrative building, amphitheatre, retail high street outlets, food plaza and other amenities. The Central Park will be provided with facilities such as viewing gallery, cafeteria and restaurant.

In the second phase, the themes will be set up, which will consist of playground apparatus and joy rides. The park will also have a Kids-Zania, apart from a section for pets, a mini zoo, an aquarium and a museum. There are plans for a club house, a banquet hall and multi-level car parking.
