THANE: Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan paved the way for implementation of the Slum Redevelopment Authority (SRA) scheme in Thane city on the lines of Mumbai SRA ahead of elections. Though the ruling DF government has cited makeover of Thane and slum free lake city as its motive for replace existing Slum Rehabilitation and Development (SRD) with SRA, industry experts see the move as pro-developer policy.
According to new set of rules like Mumbai, the incentive of the builder in Thane will be linked to the area utilized for rehabilitation of the shanties. In SRD model, the perks for the developer were based on a revenue sharing formula. "Government has appointed a committee chaired by housing secretary to study the SRA in Thane. Based on the committee findings the government will take further call on whether to set up a separate authority for slum redevelopment in Thane or not. Till the committee submits its report and government take a final call, the Mumbai-based SRA will be the authority for approval of the projects in Thane," said a senior housing department official. He added, "The proposal for having SRA in Thane was submitted by the local civic body to the urban development department. The SRA has been introduced after the TMC demanded."
