KOLHAPUR: The civic administration has decided to issue property cards to rehabilitated slum dwellers to help them enjoy the benefits of slum rehabilitation programmes.
The decision was taken after much uproar by the corporators over the rehabilitation of the slum dwellers at the standing committee meeting held on Friday. The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has completed the total station survey as part of the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY), a programme for a slum-free city. NCP corporator Rajesh Latkar said, "The rehabilitated slum dwellers have not yet got the property cards and do not possess the documents of the property rights. This stops them from reaping the benefits of the scheme. The slum dwellers expect who have got benefits from earlier schemes should get houses under RAY."
The KMC has been able to rehabilitate 700 families out of 2,300 identified beneficiaries under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP). Mahesh Gaikwad, also an NCP corporator, said, "The property card is a document to confirm the legal stay of the slum dwellers and should be given to them at the earliest."
Congress corporator Raju Ghorapade said, "After the failure of the IHSDP scheme, RAY is progressing slowly. We want the work to begin and the city to become free of slums."
Responding to the issue, a civic official said, "We will issue the property cards to the beneficiaries identified for the implementation of RAY."
