NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to confiscate the properties of property tax defaulters and auction these after May 16.

The civic body had issued warrants to 873 property tax defaulters, who had property tax dues above Rs 25,000, in the month of March, giving them an ultimatum of 21 days to pay up or face action of confiscating their movable and immovable properties.

"We had issued warrants to 873 defaulters, with the total dues worth Rs 4.13 crore. We had given an ultimatum of 21 days to these defaulters to pay their property tax dues. But only 409 defaulters paid up, amounting to Rs 93 lakh only. And of these 409 defaulters, only 204 cleared their entire dues, while 205 made partial payments. Considering the poor response even after issuing warrants, we have decided to be tough with the defaulters after May 16, once the code of conduct for the Nashik Lok Sabha polls ends," said an NMC official from the department. "We have decided to confiscate the movable and immovable properties of the property tax defaulters and auction their properties after May 16," he said.

The NMC had set a property tax collection target of Rs 105.68 crore for 2013-14, of which the civic body collected property tax of Rs 71.74 crore. The tax collection has increased by 14.37% in 2013-14, against Rs 62.73 crore in the fiscal 2012-13.

Apart from warrants, the NMC administration had also issued final notices to around 47,259 property tax defaulters with total dues of Rs 56.46 crore, giving them an ultimatum of five days to pay up. The defaulters had dues up to Rs 25,000. But only 16,238 defaulters paid their dues, amounting to Rs 14.23 lakh only. Thereafter, the NMC had issued warrants to 822 property tax defaulters, giving them an ultimatum of 21 days to pay their arrears or face action. "We would take legal action against these defaulters in the second phase," said the NMC official.
