NASHIK: The Nashik Muncipal Corporation (NMC) is planning to impose a new tax on advertisement displayed on private properties and on vehicles. The issue is to come up for decision at the general body meeting (GBM) on Friday.

Moreover, the NMC is also mulling an increase in advertising tax on hoardings across the city from present Rs 15 per sq metre to Rs 125 per sq metre per year.

Currently, the income of the NMC through advertising is close to Rs 1 crore, which is very less as compared with Mumbai and Pune. With an aim to increase the revenue of NMC through advertisements, the civic administration had appointed a private agency from Pune to prepare the new advertising policy. Accordingly, the new policy of advertising taxes will be decided at the next GBM on Friday.

Sources from NMC, "The advertising taxes in Pune and other municipal corporations are in the range of Rs 150 to Rs 200 per sq metre per year. But in Nashik, advertising taxes on hoardings are comparatively less. Hence, the civic administration has decided to hike taxes upto Rs 125 per sq metre. Moreover, the taxes are also to be levied on advertising displayed on the back sides of rickshaws, taxis and buses- both private as well as of Maharashtra State Road Transport Copropation (MSRTC). The taxes on advertising displayed on rickshaw and taxis will be Rs 100 per sq metre."

Apart from this, the NMC has also decided to impose property tax on advertising hoardings at private places on the lines of Thane and Mumbai. The property tax will be levied on the basis of rents as per agreement between advertising agency and owners of private places. The NMC is expecting the revenue of Rs 15 crore if such measures are brought into effect," the sources added.

Moreover, the NMC has also identified 450 locations with potential to set up advertising hoardings. The advertising hoardings with specific size will be put up only on these identified locations. The NMC is yet to decide whether to put up these hoardings on its own and give it to advertising agencies on rental basis, or allow advertising agencies to put up hoardings on select locations and recover taxes on the lines of Pune Municipal Corporation. The proposal on new advertising policy of NMC is soon to be tabled at the GBM of NMC for its approval, shortly."

After the ruckus in the meeting on unauthorised hoardings in the city, standing committee chairman Uddhav Nimse had directed the civic administration to conduct a survey of the advertising hoardings in the city on January 9, 2013. As per the survey conducted by the civic administration in December 2012, there were only 55 authorised hoardings, while 727 hoardings put up by 41 advertising agencies were found unauthorised. Thereafter NMC had appealed to advertising agencies to remove their illegal advertising hoardings on their own. In January and February last year, the NMC had taken action against illegal advertising hoardings across the city. Around 300 illegal advertising hoardings were removed during a drive of NMC against advertising hoardings.
