NASHIK: The first meeting of the panel on roads for revising the draft of the city's development plan (DP) was held on Thursday with primary discussions on how the roads in the proposed DP should be.

"The panel, which had its first meeting on Thursday, will come up with suggestions on the road network and connectivity in the revised DP. We have formed 13 committees comprising officials to conduct the basic survey of the draft DP. Of which, 10 committees have submitted their basic survey reports. The remaining three panels are expected to submit their reports within a week or two," a town planning department official told TOI.

"The basic survey is about reservations in the DP, lay-outs and alignments of roads. In the second phase, we will start chalking out the exact plans about the reservations keeping in mind the projected population growth. This will start once we get the basic survey reports from all the committees," he added.

The joint director (Nashik division) of the town planning department, Prakash Bhukte, who is revising the draft DP, has appointed an eight-member panel on the roads. The panel, which is headed by Bhukte, comprises assistant director town planning (ADTP) of Nashik district Bhargave, ADTP of the civic body Vinay Shende, Nashik branch president of Indian Institute of Architects Nilesh Cavan, Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI)-Nashik president Jayesh Thakkar, architects Unmesh Gaydhani and Chandrakant Dhamane and former Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) engineer Mohan Ranade.

Chavan said, "We suggested during the meeting that 30-metre wide DP roads are outdated. The width of DP roads should be more than 45 metre, so that we can plan Bus Rapid Transit System or other mass transporting system in future. Besides, we suggested alternative roads for Nashik Road and Gangapur Road. We are preparing more suggestions concerning city roads for the DP that will be presented at the second meeting."

On November 7, 2013, the state government had cancelled the draft DP of the civic body and directed the state director of the town planning department to appoint Bhukte to revise the draft DP. Accordingly, Bhukte was appointed to revise the draft DP on December 2, 2013. He was given a deadline of December 1, 2014, for revising and publishing the draft DP.
