Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday announced a new cadre for the officials of the municipalities and notified area councils (NACs) so that better services could be provided to urban dwellers.

Addressing a workshop organised by the Urban Development Department here, Naveen said the State Government was committed to the development and welfare of its people.

Naveen said urban centres are facing new challenges for their growth because of the speedy urbanisation due to financial growth. He said the State Government has taken several steps for solving problems of housing, sanitation, drinking water and electricity in the ever-increasing towns. Naveen awarded corporations, municipalities and NACs for their performance in 2010-11 and 2011-12. For these two years, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur corporations were adjudged first, second and third respectively.

Joda, Brajrajnagar and Dhenkanal  municipalities and Kantabanji, Jaleswar and Patnagarh NACs were awarded for 2010-11. Similarly, Brajrajnagar, Birmitrapur and Balangir municipalities and Titlagarh, Koraput and Gunupur NACs were awarded for their performance in 2011-12.

Minister for Urban Development and Law  Raghunath Mohanty, Development Commissioner Jugal Kishore Mohapatra, Principal Secretary in the Urban Development Department I. Srinivas and the Director, Municipal Administration, spoke.
