BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has authorized its engineering staff to cut drains and roads, blocking rainwater, to prevent waterlogging. The BMC has identified 30 points prone to waterlogging in the city.

"The cut roads and drains can be repaired immediately after clearing the clogging. This direction will be effective till August 31 during peak monsoon," said city engineer (BMC) T B K Shroff. He said this is being done for the first time to provide immediate relief to denizens.

The civic body has also directed engineering staff to remain alert till the monsoon is over. "Pumps have been kept ready to drain water. Two excavators have also been pressed into service," said Shroff.

An official said rainwater that flows through 10 main drains in the city ultimately falls into the Gangua nullah, which swells during monsoon, causing drains to overflow. "The Gangua needs to be dredged and de-siltated. The Bhubaneswar drainage division has been consulted for dredging work," said the official.

Waterlogging is witnessed in areas such as Jayadev Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Cuttack Road, Laxmisagar, Vani Vihar, Saheed Nagar, Nayapalli and Siripur.

"We had to wade through two-foot rainwater to reach the main road," said resident of ward 43 Bimal Prasad Jena. He said last year, the de-siltation work got delayed by a month, resulting in waterlogging.

Each ward has been given Rs 3 lakh for managing waterlogging, said city mayor A N Jena.

"Apart from clearing the clogging in the drains, we have directed the city health office staff to spray oil in the drains to check breeding of mosquitoes. If required, vulnerable wards, which face regular waterlogging, will be provided with additional funds," said the mayor.
