BHUBANESWAR: Armed criminals on Monday gunned down a builder in the N-4 residential area in Nayapalli.
This was the third firing incident in as many weeks, reflecting the rapidly worsening law and order situation in the city.
Three bike-borne assailants pumped three bullets on 56-year-old Krushna Chandra Nayak's chest and stomach while he was returning to his house in the N-3 locality from his office on a bike. Nayak was pillion-rider, while his office supervisor Sabyasachi Jena was riding the bike. Jena escaped unhurt.
Police said Nayak, a murder accused, who was released recently on bail, was eliminated over previous enmity in a land dispute case. "It seems like a revenge killing by his rivals. Land dispute could be a reason behind the murder. Nayak was booked in several cases," DCP Nitinjeet Singh said.
Jena said, "The three men were wearing helmets. One of them pushed us from behind. When we fell down, two of them opened fire at Nayak and fled." Nayak died while he was being taken to a private hospital.
