BHUBANESWAR: A two-storey building at Old Station Bazaar collapsed on Wednesday night as torrential rain continued to the lash the city. No one was hurt as the building was used as a godown by a sanitary shop.
Worried over incessant rain, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a notice to immediately vacate Lingaraj Market Complex at Old Town. Though BMC had declared the building unsafe about a year ago, some shopkeepers continued to do business there, sources said.
"Slum dwellers have been asked to shift to safer places as the thatched houses may collapse in the continuous rain. Besides, people in low-lying areas remained stranded as the ground floor of houses have submerged," said BMC mayor Ananta Narayan Jena. Around 200 pumps are engaged to drain out water from several low-lying areas. "The rain has affected rescue and restoration operations," he added.
