CUTTACK: The Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation (OSPHWC) will start constructing concrete houses for slum dwellers at Andarpur and Tanla Sahi here, from next week.
The Rs 27.35-crore project of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) was hanging fire for three years.
"Work at both sites will start simultaneously. We aim to complete the project within two years," said CMC commissioner Pratap Das.
At least 486 families residing in Andarpur and Tanla Sahi slums will get one a two-room flatof 300 sq ft.
The CMC in 2010 had announced to provide concrete houses to slum dwellers under Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP).
Lands at Andarpur and Tanla Sahi were identified and the project cost was Rs 17 crore at that time.
The project was stuck as no agency was interested in carrying out the construction work.
The civic body had floated tenders thrice for but did not receive a single application.
Sources claim that the lengthy process of the civic body in clearing bills of contractors and low price of the project acted as deterrents.
Finding no other way, the civic body requested the OSPHWC, which executes housing schemes for police, to take up the project. After much persuasion, the body agreed.
