BHUBANESWAR: A huge patch of land belonging to the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco), which was encroached by unauthorised occupants, was freed by the Commissionerate Police on Sunday.
The 20-acre land, adjoining Infocity, had been taken over by some slum dwellers and land brokers about a week back. Makeshift structures had also been erected in the encroached land which comes under Chandaka police limits. A large unit of police team, in presence of Idco officials, evicted the unauthorised occupants. The entire eviction process passed off smoothly as no resistance was offered.
Earlier, the Idco had sought the Commissionerate Police’s help in clearing the area of the encroachers apprehending trouble. The land is estimated in several crores of rupees since real estate value in the area has shot up given the rapid development in the region.
Since there were no permanent structures in the periphery and the occupants had been informed well in advance to vacate the place, ACP Fagua Singh said the police did not face much difficulty during the operation.
At least seven platoons of police force led by two ACP ranked officers and four IICs were engaged in the eviction drive.
