KHURDA: The housing plot allotment scheme of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), aimed at providing land to build houses for people here at an affordable price, has failed to take off. Five years have passed after its stone-laying ceremony.

According to 2011 census report, the urban population of Khurda town has increased rapidly. Also, skyrocketing land price has made it impossible for lower and middleincome families to buy land. Locals allege BDA is adopting double standards while allocating plots. It is providing land to the residents of Bhubaneswar under various schemes easily, whereas Khurda is being "neglected," they say.

In a bid to provide land to Khurda urban area residents at affordable prices, BDA had earmarked 26.284 acre of land at Sanapalla near TLC cremation ground under a housing plot development scheme in 2007. The foundation stone for the project was laid by then law minister Bishwabhusan Harichandan.

Spending crores, basic infrastructure such as the boundary work, road construction and water tank were completed soon, but the main work did not progress. The boundary wall in some places got broken and the area is now being used as a garbage dump yard.

Replying to a query posed by reporters about the project, housing and urban development minister Debi Prasad Mishra said he would assess the progress of the project at the next review meeting
