BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has slapped closure notices on nine hotels in Puri and one in Bhubaneswar, official sources said.

About a month ago, the pollution board found 325 hotels in Puri violating the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. The hotels were served show-cause notices, but the nine failed to give satisfactory reply.

"We have intimated Puri and Khurda collectors about the closure notices. They have been asked to ensure that the hotels are closed in two weeks," said OSPCB regional officer (Bhubaneswar) Hadibandhu Panigrahi.

The board has also sent a letter to Cesu, asking it to disconnect electricity supply to these hotels. "The kitchens and restaurants in the hostels would be sealed. These hostels also cannot be used for lodging and boarding purpose," said Panigrahi.

The hotels in Puri were found discharging waste water of restaurants, including kitchens and toilets, to the sea near Bankimuhan without treating them. The board detected the violation after it tested water samples collected from Bankimuhan.

"The water samples had high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). High BOD and COD content in water indicates lesser oxygen presence, unfit for human consumption and cause of pollution," said an OSPCB officer.

According to norms, the permissible limit of BOD is 30 mg per litre of water and COD 250 mg. "But the samples taken from Puri showed BOD and COD presence four times higher than the permissible limit. Besides, oil, grease and suspended particulate matter were detected in them," the officer said.

Around 100 hotels in Puri have also not obtained the mandatory consent from the pollution board for setting up kitchens, restaurants and toilets. "Hotels with 20 rooms are required to set up effluent treatment plant (ETP). But hotels in Puri with 50 rooms don't have ETP," the officer added.
