States to Follow Odisha Disaster Management Model

BHUBANESWAR: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has sought a detailed report from the State Government on institutional response to cyclone Phailin and the post cyclone restoration measures.

“Give us a note on detail preparation, operations carried on and post cyclone restoration so that those can be developed as models for other states,” NDMA member B Bhattacharjee told a high level meeting here.

The NDMA member, an expert on forecasting, early warning, GIS, IT and Communication, took stock of the State Government preparedness before the cyclone and post-cyclone restoration measures at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary JK Mohapatra here on Friday. 

Principal Secretary Energy Pradeep Kumar Jena presented a report on the extent of damage caused to the power transmission and distribution sectors and the measures taken by the Government for reconstruction and restoration of power supply to over 39.14 lakh affected consumers.

Bhattacharjee appreciated the initiatives of the State Government to put in place a disaster proof power supply infrastructure and disaster resilient housing schemes for coastal people prone to cyclone and surge of sea water.

Apart from disaster management and post-Phailin reconstruction programme, the meeting also discussed the status of implementation of national cyclone risk management project, GIS based information system for disaster management in the districts and collection of additional field data, decision support system (DSS) for training of the disaster managers for improved preparedness and Odisha disaster recovery project.
