CHANDIGARH: Two real estate dealers were arrested for allegedly cheating Rs 16 lakh from a Jamshedpur resident for providing him a 250 square feet plot at Palm Garden at Mullanpur in Mohali on Monday.

Accused Manish Batra of Phase IX, Mohali, and Rajeev Kumar of Sector 38 were remanded in judicial custody. About Rs 13 lakh out of Rs 16 lakh were taken by Batra and Rs 3 lakh by Rajeev. Police maintained the bank accounts of the accused, in which money of victim Tushar Bimplesh was transferred, was seized. The fraud took place in February 2014. An FIR against the two was registered in January at Sector 17 police station.

A team led by ASI Shiv Charan arrested Batra from Mohali and Rajeev from Sector 38. Police sources said Rajeev had played the role of a middleman and arranged a deal between Batra and complainant Tushar.

Sources said Tushar was willing to buy a plot at Palm Garden, which was selected by Batra. Batra got an agreement of sale of the plot with Tushar claiming he was the holder of general power of attorney (GPA). The accused had failed to deliver the possession of plot.

The accused had approached lower court and Punjab and Haryana high court seeking anticipatory bail but their applications were rejected. Investigating officer ASI Shiv Charan said Batra was earlier also booked in a case of fraud related to property deal at Sector 17 police station.

Later, he accepted to return all the money to the victim in the court.
