KOLKATA: A real estate agent operating from Sodepur area was murdered by two miscreants near his house on Tuesday night.

Alok Brahmachari was shot dead by two bike-borne goons. Six hours later, another person belonging to the rival group was hacked to death allegedly by Brahmachari's associates.

Though police said that the twin murders were the result of real estate rivalry, the deaths open up Trinamool Congress' internal feud as well.

Around 10.30pm on Tuesday, as Brahmachari was returning home in his motorbike at Natagar under Ghola police station, two persons on a motorbike stopped him near his house and shot him twice in his lower abdomen and chest. The duo then fled leaving the 42-year-old developer seriously wounded. Locals rushed him to Panihati State General Hospital where he was declared dead. They alleged that Brahmachari's murder was planned by a rival gang led anti-socials named Raju Cholai Tinku and Debu.

"The gang is headed by Uttam Das, who is now in jail but is said to be operating from there," a local said. Locals protested on Tuesday night demanding action against the accused. Police had to neutralise the mob after promising prompt action. The situation turned worse on Wednesday morning, when locals, mostly associates of Brahmachari, traced Debu near his house at Mahendra Palli Jhilpar. They pounced on him and hacked him to death. "Debu died on his way to hospital," an investigating officer said.

Brahmachari's wife Kakali alleged, "My husband used to say that he might be killed. Uttam Das is the kingpin and is assisted by local goons like Tinku and Debu." Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy promised action.

"The murder is a result of old rivalry over real estate business," a senior officer of Barrackpore Commissionerate said. Local people, however, not ready to buy this theory. "Both the groups are supporter of Trinamool Congress and they are patronised by two top party leaders. The internal conflict within the party has led to the murder," a local resident said.
