'Over 2 lakh houses built under central schemes in 2 years'

NEW DELHI: The minister of state for housing and urban poverty alleviation Rao Inderjit Singh told Lok Sabha on Wednesday that 2.24 lakh homes have been constructed for urban poor under the old and new housing programmes during the last two years. 

The minister said these houses have been built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) launched in June last year and the earlier Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission (JNNURM) and Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) that are being continued. The central government is supporting housing schemes under JNNURM and RAY till March 2017. 

Of the houses built for the benefit of urban poor during the last two years, Tamil Nadu has built 37,355 dwelling units followed by Maharashtra with 36,992, West Bengal with 22,620, Rajasthan with 21,197, Gujarat with 15,861, Uttar Pradesh with 13,836, Delhi with 12,500, Madhya Pradesh with 12,216, Karnataka with 7,663, Andhra Pradesh with 6,583 and Chhattisgarh with 6,532 houses. 

In this period, Bihar built 5,171 homes, Jharkhand 4,028, Kerala 3,870, Punjab 2,809, Telangana 2,552, Odisha 2,274, Nagaland 1,866, Haryana 1,402, Jammu & Kashmir 1,203 and Assam 895. 

Singh said that under PMAY (Urban), the government has approved construction of 8,54,386 houses for the benefit of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) with an investment of Rs 52,066 crore for which central assistance of Rs 12,602 crore will be provided. In addition, interest subsidy has been extended for construction /upgradation of 8,004 dwelling units under PMAY (Urban).
