Lucknow: The UP Housing and Development Board (UPHDB) would kick off the state government’s affordable housing scheme in the state capital on January 26.

Initially, the housing body has decided to open bookings for 5,500 houses. Of these, 3,000 flats would be built in its Vrindavan scheme while another 2,500 would come up in Awadh Vihar Scheme near Shaheed Path in Gomti Nagar extension.

“The registration booklets would be available at all our offices. Applicants can apply online on our website also,” said a UPHDB official. He said the bookings would remain open for about a month to ensure that maximum people get the opportunity to apply under the scheme.

The UPHDB has been given a target to build at least 10,000 such houses in its schemes in Agra, Ghaziabad and Meerut against the total two lakh houses proposed by the state government in two years time by all development and housing bodies.

Known as the Samajwadi Party Awas Yojna, the scheme was announced by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on December 6.

Part of the state government’s initiative to provide affordable houses, these dwelling units would be priced between 15 lakh and 22 lakh and constructed in Vrindavan, and Awadh Vihar schemes in the state capital. “We would soon be undertaking similar projects in other cities also,” said a housing official.

Aimed at the middle class, the state government has fixed the upper limit for construction cost of these houses with a carpet area of 65 sq m to 75 sq m. The price ceiling would be 3,000/sq feet in the National Capital Region, 2,800 in metros and 2,500 in other cities. “We are trying to reduce this cost further. Our initial cost assessment is 2,100,” said the official.

The UP Awas Bandhu has issued detailed guidelines for the affordable housing scheme, under which private developers too can come up with their own projects.
