GANDHINAGAR: Seven cities of Gujarat Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Junagadh and Gandhinagar have been included in the list of 100 smart cities to be developed by government of India's Smart City Mission.

Gujarat, along with Kerala, Rajasthan and Karnataka, has got the highest number of smart cities in the country. Though detailed plan of financial assistance is yet to be made public, these seven cities will get at least Rs 100 crore direct grants over the next five years.

Gujarat expects a minimum Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 crore grant for smart cities in the current year. "Apart from Rs 100 crore minimum grant allocation to each city, we expect prompt approval to a number of projects in all seven cities," said a source.

Jamnagar, which missed out on the smart city status, has been included under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation of 500 cities (AMRUT). Under AMRUT, cities will get 70% direct grant from GOI. A team of top Gujarat officials will visit Delhi on Wednesday to submit its proposals.
