MYSURU: The heritage city will strive to free itself from slums so its brand value is enhanced. The tourist hub will get a fillip with a housing project for the creation of basic infrastructure. The Centre has sanctioned the project to the city to clear 172 slums and to elevate Mysuru as a slum-free city in 10 years.

District minister V Srinivas Prasad on Tuesday said Mysuru is known as a planned city. "By clearing slums, we can expect more tourists to Mysuru," he said, adding: "Rajiv Awas Yojana will clear 172 slums from the city and slum-dwellers will be rehabilitated in 2,800 houses."

The Centre's project aims at helping slum-dwellers get houses. The Union ministry of housing and poverty alleviation, which was launched on 2013, will be on till 2022. One million beneficiaries across India are expected to be covered under Rajiv Awas Yojana.

Prasad said that basic amenities like roads, drinking water, underground drainage system and community centres will also be created under the project. He asked elected representatives, especially corporators of all the 65 wards in the city, to extend cooperation to implement the project. Among the 2,800 houses sanctioned, 700 will be built in Narasimharaja assembly segment, 1,329 in Krishnaraja and 655 in Chamaraja segments. As many as 116 houses are under construction at Indira Colony in Narasimharaja segment.

During a workshop for stakeholders to prepare a roadmap for slum-free city, jointly organized by Mysuru City Corporation, Regional Centre for Urban and Environment Studies, Osmania University (Hyderabad) and the ministry of urban development, MCC commissioner C G Betsurmath said each house will be built at a cost of Rs 5 lakh, of which 50% will be extended by the Centre.

According to him, the Centre is expected to allocate Rs 1,168 crore for the construction of houses. According to a survey, there are 172 slums in the city limits, and they will be covered under Rajiv Awas Yojana.

The survey has marked 53,908 houses in the 172 slums, in which about 2.65 lakh people are living. The Karnataka State Slum Development Board will build the houses, while the maintenance has been tasked to the civic body. MLAs Vasu and Tanveer Sait, mayor R Lingappa, Rajiv Awas Yojana state coordinator Balakrishna Prasad attended the workshop.
