BHUBANESWAR: Amid fierce protest by the locals, civic authorities demolished about 60 permanent structures encroaching on a stretch of road in GGP Colony here on Wednesday.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had requisitioned for the demolition drive before the City Enforcement Monitoring Committee (CEMC) for expansion of internal roads to 30 feet. The drive was originally scheduled for August 28 but could not be carried out due to stiff resistance from locals.

After receiving prior intimation about the drive on Wednesday, locals squatted on the road leading to the demolition site in order to prevent enforcement officials from reaching the spot.

When the officials arrived at the spot with police force, locals tried to stop them. Intense argument ensued between the protestors and enforcement officials comprising BMC Assistant Commissioner (Recovery) Sumita Behera, BDA Enforcement Officer Deba Prasad Das and BDA Liasoning Officer Subhransu Mohanty.

The demonstrators eventually yielded after it was announced that additional forces will be deployed.

A total of 35 unauthorised boundary walls, 25 extensions of permanent structures, three shops and 13 temporary structures including cabins and small shops were demolished and a stretch of 1.5 km cleared.

Remaining 50 illegal structures on the same stretch could not be cleared due to rain.
