Bhubaneswar: Many parks constructed by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in different parts of the city are in dilapidated conditions.
BMC had built 24 parks in the city in collaboration with Residents Welfare Associations (RWA). According to the agreement the RWAs were to take care of maintenance of the parks for the first 3 years. The maintenance cost was to be borne by the BMC and RWA equally. But neither BMC not the RWAs are taking proper care of the parks.
Many swings and other equipment have broken down. As a result, children are deprived of finding adequate recreation in the park, said Gudli Mohapatra, a resident of VSS Nagar.
The condition of parks in Kharvel Nagar and Vani Vihar are no better. People have encroached the parks in many areas, Mohapatra added.
When asked, BMC Mayor Anant Narayan Jena said, the maintenance work of parks was given to RWAs. It was their responsibility. However, now BMC is planning to revive a few parks on public-private partnership mode, he added.
