MALAPPURAM: As many as 184 homeless families in Malappuram can reside in their 'green houses' as the municipality will soon inaugurate the flats constructed for economically backward families, under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme ( IHSDP) project.


The houses would be handed over to the beneficiaries at a public function to be held here.


The work to provide water supply is underway, after which the project would be inaugurated and the houses handed over to the beneficiaries, sources said.


The housing project, which was started in 2009, is spread across 5 acres owned by the Kainad municipality. The beneficiaries will have to spend only Rs 50,000 for each house, as against Rs 2 lakh, the cost at which it has been constructed.


The civic body has already collected Rs 30,000 as advance. Officials said the remaining amount would not be collected from them. Instead, they can use it to set up ovens in their kitchens. The municipality had prepared the list of eligible beneficiaries for the project on the basis of recommendations from the ward councillors concerned.


Each house has a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen, a toilet and a verandah apart from rain water harvesting provisions and lighting facility powered through solar system, installed and maintained by Energy Management Centre (EMC), an agency under the state government.


A waste treatment plant has also been set up. Construction of roads and drainages has been completed. The entire project, with a total estimated cost of Rs 25 crore, is being implemented with 80% funding from the centre and 10% each from the state government and the municipality.


Meanwhile, municipal authorities said the fund would be still insufficient to complete the remaining work of the houses. Hence, a part of unutilized fund of other projects of the civic body would be used for the same.
