BHUBANESWAR: Unauthorized constructions on conservancy lanes (gaps between two rows of houses) at Unit-IX here have led to choking of sewer lines.
There are around 2,000 government quarters in the area, which falls under ward 29. "More than 400 unauthorized houses have come up in the narrow lanes," said local corporator Sk Nizamuddin.
The quarters belong to general administration (GA) department. "Though GA officers have been informaed about the violations, no action has been taken. Sanitation workers are finding it difficult to clean the drains as unauthorized constructions cramp the narrow lanes," he said.
The pipelines, laid by public health and engineering organization, have also developed cracks. "The water and sewer lines are running close to each other. There is a possibility of water contamination because of leakages in the pipes," he added.
Former president of Bhoi Nagar People's Association Natabara Mohanty said the city management group, comprising representatives of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), GA department and police, in 2011 decided to evict the encroachers. "Even after three years, no steps have been taken to demolish the unauthorized houses," he said.
The allottees hire the encroahers as maid, gardner and watchman, Mohanty alleged.
Mayor Anant Narayan Jena said he would request the GA department to look into it. "We can help the GA in the demolition drive, if it comes up with a list of such violations," he added.
