Hyderabad: Cracking the whip on land encroachers in Hyderabad, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has asked officials to ensure that every inch of land in the capital had ownership title.

Mr. Rao held a meeting with Finance Minister Eatala Rajender and senior officials to discuss measures to protect government land, construct houses for slum dwellers and distribute pattas for lands occupied by poor in Hyderabad.

An official release later said Mr. Rao entrusted the job of framing guidelines for protecting the land and dealing with encroachers, leased and assigned lands to a committee of secretaries headed by his Principal Secretary S. Narsing Rao. It will hold a full fledged meeting with Collectors and revenue officers in and around Hyderabad on December 9.

The meeting will assess government land available in the city, encroachments, constructions, misuse and vacant.

Asking officials to initiate tough action against encroachers, Mr. Rao insisted that poor get pattas if they lived on government lands. “The land should be resumed from encroachers. The officials should not hesitate to book people who occupied lands worth crores of rupees under the Preventive Detention Act. It should be done irrespective of their high background and political affiliation. Even leaders of ruling TRS should not be spared,” Mr Rao said.

Mr. Rao noted that urban ceiling surplus lands and government lands were exposed to encroachments in the city by real estate dealers and builders. At the same time, migrant labour constructed huts and sheds to make a living in the city. The government will take a lenient view towards the latter and will provided alternate accommodation if they lived in places leading to drains.

The Chief Minister also said syndicates of people that encroached government land, created fake stamps, certificates and stamp paper flourished in the city. There were thousands of court cases in connection with these malpractices, he said. Mr. Rao asked people to get their constructions on government land regularised, failing which the land will be resumed.
