NOIDA: Although the central government managed to pass the amended land acquisition bill in the Lok Sabha, farmers continued their protests in Greater Noida on Friday. Over 200 farmers from different villages of Greater Noida flagged off a padyatra, or a street march, to protest against the land acquisition ordinance and are to be joined by their Noida counterparts.

Farmers from all over Noida and Greater Noida are expected to keep the rally going for the next three days. The group will halt for the night at different locations and resume their walk in the mornings.

"We flagged off the march from Bhatta-Parsaul. Farmers joined us from different villages and will participate in our protest over the next few days,

" Dushyant Nagar, convener of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti (KSS), told TOI.

The three-day march is expected to culminate in a mass gathering of farmers at Rajghat in New Delhi on March 16.

"From Rajghat, we will march towards Parliament. We will raise slogans against the government and want the entire country to wake up to the realities of the farmers and the adversities they are being subjected to because of mindless land acquisition," said a KSS member.

"The farmers' issue is crucial to the country. Our objective is to educate and generate awareness among farmers about their rights. It is in the interest of the country that the farmers' welfare is kept in mind during policy-making. The farmer bears the brunt of all the development plans of the country. There is no social support for this community. We want all the farmers of the country to be united in asking for their rights," Nagar said.
