Mysuru: In a major relief to the construction industry in Mysuru, the State government has permitted extraction of sand from patta land or privately-owned agricultural land situated along the river in Mysuru district.
The district permission had sought permission to extract sand from patta land , due to the scarcity faced by the construction industry following the Supreme Court ban on extraction of sand from the riverbed.
The State government, which has issued an executive order in the regard, said the permission for extracting sand from patta land is restricted to Mysuru district. The government had banned extraction of sand from patta land in 2011 in view of complaints of the poor quality of the sand.
However, the Department of Mines and Geology carried out laboratory tests of sand available in 40 acres of land in Himmavu and Toremavu villages in Nanjangud and found its quality suitable for construction.
The State government has permitted extraction of sand from these 40 acres of land in Nanjangud.
Superintendent of Mysuru district police Abhinav Khare said the Public Works Department would have to take the responsibility of extracting sand from the patta land. A stockyard will be set up and vehicles transporting sand from the stockyard will be given permits.
The president of the Mysuru District Maralu Horatagara Samithi welcomed the decision.
