BANGALORE: The nerve centre of the state's administration in Bangalore is not fireproof.

Suo motu proceedings taken up by the Lokayukta confirmed there isn't much compliance with fire safety measures at the Vidhana Soudha, Vikasa Soudha, Multi-Storey Building, Visvesvaraya Towers, Legislators' Home, City Civil Court Complex, the metropolitan magistrate courts and the Karnataka High Court. This, even though Rs 10 crore has been allocated for it this year.

Lokayukta Y Bhaskar Rao has ordered the public works department and the fire and emergency services department to comply with its order to implement all fire safety measures in government buildings across the state by November 17 and submit an action-taken report.

The Lokayukta summoned the deputy director of the Karnataka Fire Services Department, the assistant director of town planning, BBMP and the chief engineer (communitcation and buildings) in PWD (south) to ascertain safety measures in government buildings.

He said the fire services department said the PWD doesn't consult it on safety measures in government buildings and does not even seek No-Objection Certificates from it. PWD officials also said they would take up measures on a war footing. They also said there is a separate budgetary allocation for fire safety measures in high-rise government buildings.
