RANCHI: With Ranchi witnessing a population boom and space crunch for farther development of infrastructure, the new government is hunting for a new area to develop it as the core capital region.

Chief minister Raghubar Das and some bureaucrats on Sunday visited some areas to identify plots for infrastructure growth.

"The population of the capital is on the rise and there is a huge pressure on existing infrastructure, hence the new capital must be established in a region where availability of underground water, connectivity, availability of power sources and open space is maximum also giving priority to the fact that least number of people are evicted in course of land acquisition," said Das.

On Sunday, Das was on a recce at Khunti Road, Ring Road and Namkum. He was accompanied by chief secretary Rajiv Gauba, principal secretary of building construction, Sukhdeo Singh, secretary to the CM Sanjay Kumar, principal secretary of planning and development Arun Kumar Singh, transport secretary K K Soan and Ranchi deputy commissioner Manoj Kumar.

The chief minister directed the officials to identify a suitable place and come up with a presentation at the earliest, keeping certain qualifying benchmarks under consideration.

Das also asked the officials to include a detailed plan for rehabilitation of all those who are likely to be evicted from any region where the core capital is planned and include that in the presentation.

Das insisted that the process of identification, preparation of presentation with details of land, proposal for construction of government buildings and the displacement plan should all be completed within a given time frame. He visited Hardag, Dundu and Tupudana on Khunti road, Kharchidag, Dungri, Uwanghatu and Khatanga on Ring road and the unused land of military camp at Namkum.

Core capital region, apart from having major government establishments like secretariat, assembly building and residential quarters for the ministers, will also have all modern facilities of a smart city.

Earlier in 2002, when Babulal Marandi was the chief minister, the government had identified a land near Sukurhutu for development of the core capital region, foundation stone for which was laid by Lal Krishna Advani.

But the project failed to take off due to protests by local villagers and delay on part of government to start work over the project.

Taking lessons from the past, Das has made it clear that once the area is identified and an official announcement made, there should not be any delay in execution of the project.
