BENGALURU: Faced with widespread protest across the state, Congress government on Friday decided to put on hold its eviction plans of encroachers of revenue land across Karnataka.

Replaying to debate on the issue in the legislative assembly, Law and parliamentary affairs Minister T B Jayachandra announced that people who have been cultivating on encroached revenue lands will not be evicted if the land holding is up to five acres till applications submitted by such farmers before the taluk-level Land Grant Committee for land ownership rights, were cleared. It is against law to evict such farmers without clearing their applications for ownership rights, he said.

He said the state government was sympathetic to the plight of the small and marginal farmers, who had encroached on revenue lands and had been cultivating the same for several decades. The minister said the revenue department has issued a circular on January 17, 2015, stating that families would not be evicted if they had been cultivating up to five acres of revenue lands.

Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar and other members of parties had alleged that in the name of encroachment clearance, the officials were harassing small and marginal farmers and demanded regularisation of encroached revenue and forest lands by families in Malnad, coastal and other parts of the State.
