Govt says over 3000 sq km of state’s forest land encroached

Guwahati: More than 3,000 square km of Assam's forest land has been occupied by encroachers, forest minister Etuwa Munda informed the House on Friday.

The state's total forest land is 20,138.32 sq-km.

To a separate question, the minister, in his written reply, said of the five national parks in the state, it is only in Kaziranga that there is no encroachment.

According to Munda, 31 squre km of Manas National Park, 2.35 square km of Orang National Park, 5 square km of Nameri National Park and 3.71 square km of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park have been encroached. The national parks in the state together cover 1,548 square km of forest land.

Of the 20 wildlife sanctuaries, 0.34 square km is encroached in Bherjan-Borajan-Padumani Sanctuary, 5.08 sq-km in Burhachapori Sanctuary, 3 sq-km in Laokhowa Sanctuary, 85 sq-km in Sonai-Rupai Sanctuary, 4 sq-km in Barnadi Sanctuary and 2.28 sq-km in Amchang Sanctuary.

The total area of all the wildlife sanctuaries is 1,947.17 square km.

The minister said 248 leopards were found in the state in the 2000 census, 5,420 wild elephants in the 2011 census and 1,27,502 monkeys of various species in the 2009 census.

The census at Kaziranga recorded 2,290 rhinos in 2012 and 2,329 in 2013, while 100 rhinos were recorded at Manas, 100 at Orang and 93 at Pobitora in the 2012 census.

The minister said 30 leopards have been killed in man-animal conflicts since 2011 and 51 cases under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, have been registered in connection with the killing of leopards. Two of these leopards were killed in the city.
